The City of Santa Fe Economic Development Division and the Convention and Visitors Bureau have partnered with the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce and the Santa Fe Alliance for the Home for the Holidays initiative. Both the Alliance and the Chamber agree that shopping locally is the single most important thing the community can do to strengthen the local economy.

To emphasize the city’s support of local businesses, Mayor Coss has proclaimed December “Buy Local Month.”

Additionally, to promote shopping and eating downtown, the City of Santa Fe Parking Division is providing FREE parking at ALL downtown parking meters, including paid parking spaces at the Railyard, on Saturday and Sunday from now until Dec. 28. Free parking at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and Railyard underground garages has been expanded and is free ALL Day Saturday and Sunday from now until Dec. 28. This is a total of about 900 free parking spaces for the public to use and shop downtown.  The Parking Division is also providing one free hour of parking at the Sandoval Parking Garage on Saturdays and Sundays; all subsequent hours will cost the normal daily rate.

So, don’t spend time and energy worrying about what will happen with the economy this season, do something positive: spend at home for the holidays.

City and Business Groups Unite to Support the Local Economy

City and Business Groups Unite to Support the Local Economy

In these challenging times, shopping locally is the single most important thing the community can do to strengthen the local economy. The City of Santa Fe has joined Santa Fe Alliance and the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce in a ‘Home for the Holidays’ initiative encouraging residents to shop locally this holiday season.

To promote shopping and eating downtown, the City of Santa Fe Parking Division is pleased to announce that will provide FREE parking at ALL downtown parking meters, including paid parking spaces at the Railyard, on Saturday and Sunday from now until Dec. 28. Free parking at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and Railyard underground garages has been expanded and will be free ALL Day Saturday and Sunday from now until Dec. 28. This is a total of about 900 free parking spaces for the public to use and shop downtown.

Additionally, the Parking Division will provide one free hour of parking at the Sandoval Parking Garage on Saturdays and Sundays; all subsequent hours will cost the normal daily rate.

To make sure a ticket doesn’t dampen your holiday spirit, please note that all parking rules and regulations still apply; motorists who park illegally in yellow zones, loading zones or handicap spaces as well as those who violate time zone restrictions (1-hour parking, 2-hour parking, etc.) will be penalized accordingly. Also, please note that the free parking is being provided to those individuals shopping in the downtown and not attendees of conferences or trade shows. The City has already pre-sold tickets for the Winter Spanish Market and cannot refund money.

Shopping locally rather than online or in Albuquerque, helps keep Santa Fe businesses open and creating jobs for the local workforce.  Local jobs mean more dollars are spent locally and that continues to support a diverse and vibrant community; it’s a positive cycle.

Did you know…

  • Santa Fe businesses generate more than 93 million dollars in taxes each year.
  • Local dollars support important City services like public safety, schools, street repair and parks.
  • For every dollar spent locally, between 13 and  45 cents stays within the economy.   Money spent online or out of town leaves the community completely.

To emphasize the city’s support of local businesses, Mayor Coss has proclaimed December “Buy Local Month.”

Both the Santa Fe Alliance and the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce agree that shopping locally is the single most important thing the community can do to strengthen the local economy.

“The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce encourages all local residents to shop in Santa Fe as much as possible during the holiday season. Now more than ever it is important to support Santa Fe businesses. Doing your holiday shopping locally is the best way to sustain local jobs and tax revenues that multiply within our community,” says Simon Brackley, President and CEO of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce. “A dollar spent in at a Santa Fe business rather than online helps other Santa Feans with income and helps the local government provide the services we all depend on.”

Vicki Pozzebon, Executive Director of the Santa Fe Alliance says, “Let’s all get creative this holiday season and think about how to keep Santa Fe different.  Shopping locally and choosing local services not only supports local business, it supports everyone in the community, because every dollar you spend here stays here and is recycled in the community.”

So, don’t spend time and energy worrying about what will happen with the economy, do something positive: spend at home for the holidays.
